Head of China, Benny Liu, talks to IR Magazine about how companies can tackle misinformation and rumour spreading on social media in China. Speed of response is key, he advocates, and traditional media plays just as strong a role as new media, “News spreads much faster than before so IR has to do the same. You need to be quick and transparent to address the issues.”

He also points out, WeChat is not the only source of misinformation, but it is powerful because it is the most popular vehicle for posting and sharing comments, so it needs to be proactively integrated into a company’s IR communications strategy, as many China listed companies are already doing very effectively. Liu urges more Hong Kong listed companies to do the same, “The earlier you engage with a channel as popular with investors as WeChat, the quicker you gain their trust.”
